Soccer and ...horses?
In honor of the start of the World Cup here is a fun soccer related fact!
Naturally this fact starts with horses and donkeys…we will get to the soccer part I promise! There is a wonderful organization across the pond in the UK named Redwings Sanctuary that rescues, rehabilitates and cares for neglected/abused equines. They started in 1984 with the rescue of a pony named Sheba. Now they care for over 1500 horses, ponies, donkeys, and mules in England and Scotland! They have behavior specialists for those who need it and an in house veterinary facility (and vets on staff) for any injured animals. Those that can be rehomed go to a specialized “rehoming center” for training before being adopted. The rescue dedicates themselves to all their “residents” living out full lives in a safe and loving location.
Now, when a horse/pony/donkey/mule is injured usually they end up with bandages. For leg injuries or sores those bandages get wrapped around a leg. However, horses being horses, often try to take them off or simply get them unraveled with their time in pasture. Here comes the soccer bit I promised. Premier League Arsenal FC (who recently got their first Premier League title since 2004!) uses a lot of gear. Luckily they have Michael Lloyd, Arsenal's Sustainability Manager. And luckily for the rescue - the forward of mens Arsenal team Kai Havertz has rescued donkeys previously. And so a donation was made of 40 pairs of footless soccer socks! The socks are being used to protect legs from flies, hold bandages in place, protect from rubbing heads on legs (a good way to scratch a face itch if you dont have hands), and to hold back leg hair during hoof trimming. Also, its just super duper cute!
